About Us

LIGO, short for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, is an ambitious project to detect gravitational waves from the cores of exploding stars, from colliding black holes, and from rapidly rotating neutron stars in our Galaxy. Scientists from the UW-Milwaukee Center for Gravitation and Cosmology have been part of this effort since the mid nineties.

The UW-Milwaukee LIGO Scientific Collaboration group searches for gravitational waves from gamma-ray bursts, neutron-star and black-hole collisions, cosmic strings, and rapidly spinning neutron stars. Our research spans gravitational-wave astronomy from the physics of astrophysical sources to joint observing with electromagnetic telescopes. By bringing together expertise in gravitational physics, astrophysics, and grid-computing, we can address scientific challenges that are on the critical path to the success of LIGO and at the frontiers of science.

Our group has about 20 members including professors, scientists, graduate students and undergraduates who work closely together on the cutting-edge research. We have first-rate dedicated computing facilities including a 1560 core cluster which will soon be expanded to triple this size.

The UW-Milwaukee LIGO Scientific Collaboration research group is supported by the National Science Foundation, UW-Milwaukee College of Letters and Science, and UW-Milwaukee Graduate School.
