Beowulf Hardware Assembly

Remove all Alpha 300XL's from boxes.

Each computer comes with a pair of keys which lock/unlock the case.
Be sure to secure the keys to their corresponding computer.

Match each computer with a keyboard and power cord

Set aside a mouse for the Master node.

Put remaining mice, WIN/NT discs, manuals, etc. in a safe place.

Prominently label all machines with their serial number and assign each
machine a node number. Label the node as well.

Open all machines.

Install fast (100Mbs) ethernet cards (note that these machines ship with
10Mbs cards):

Install two DEC 500 fast ethernet cards into Master node.

Install one DEC 500 fast ethernet card into each of the other nodes.

During installation, label each machine with its ethernet hardware address.
This number is prominently displayed on the card.

Make a list of all node numbers, their corresponding IP addresses and their
ethernet hardware addresses. This is necessary to write the /etc/bootptab
file.

Install extra memory* in each of the machines:

Memory installation instructions can be found in the literature accompanying
the machines.

In the Master node, remove the four 8MB SIMMs it shipped with and install
four 64MB SIMMs and four 32MB SIMMs.

In every other node install four 32MB SIMMs.

Close all machines.
* All replacement SIMMs are 8x36, true parity.
