Proto-node Installation Preparation
(the same initial steps needed to prepare the
master)
-
Prepare some disks you will need:
-
format a DOS floppy (FAT filesystem).
-
download the latest version of MILO and put it on the floppy. NOTE:
It is important that you have the correct version of MILO. If your
version is incorrect, MILO will not reboot cleanly with "shutdown -r now".
Rather, it will hang and you may receive "kernel alignment trap" errors.
If you can't find the Alpha 300XL MILO, try MILO for ALCOR systems.
-
from the RedHat CD put /mnt/cdrom/milo-mirror/alphabios/linload.exe
on the floppy.
-
build a RAMDISK on a separate floppy (see p. 48 of the RedHat v4.2 manual).
-
Set up the hardware:
-
Attach the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord to the XL300.
-
If necessary, attach monitor power cord to monitor.
-
Plug monitor and CPU power cords into outlet.
-
Power up monitor and CPU to ensure that the system is functioning properly.
