Beowulf Network Topology

Our Beowulf is implemented as a private network. We use the IP network address 192.168.2.0 (which is part of the 192.168.0.0 domain reserved by the powers-that-be for the private networks of us mortals). The nodes (apart from the master) have no gateway to the outside world nor any domain name service. They can not communicate to any machine not on the private network. Furthermore, no DNS service knows of their existence, nor is there any gateway to them. They are isolated from anything not on their private network.

The master node acts as the access point for the outside world to reach the Beowulf system. Because it is on the 192.168.2.0 network, it can communicate with the other nodes, and because it is on the physics subnet 129.89.57.0, we can communicate with it. We have chosen to try to limit access to the Master node even from the 129.89.57.0 network as much as possible. The topology is shown below
