This procedure walks you through the Fedora Core installation program. It
summarizes the significant information and decisions you will have to
make. If the installer asks a question that is not covered by the
following procedure, simply give the default or most obvious response;
you won't likely go wrong.
- Place the first Fedora Core 3 installation CD in the CD drive,
power down and reboot. Make sure that the BIOS is configured to boot from the CD drive.
- Type linux askmethod text expert and press enter
to begin the installation process. You can probably get by
with these instructions with the graphical installation, but this
document is tailored to the text mode.
- Choose the English language and a US keyboard.
- Select HTTP for the installation media.
- Uncheck "dynamic IP configuration" by pressing the spacebar

Nameserver: 129.89.7.2 (You will add more later)
- Website Name: 129.89.57.123
Fedora Core Directory: 3 (yes, the digit, 3)
- Skip the CD verification. If you doubt the integrity of the CD(s) you are installing
from, then it would be best to go ahead and verify. It will take a few
minutes per CD.
- Choose OK when presented with the "Welcome to Fedora Core!" window.
- If you are prompted with a choice to upgrade because you had an earlier
Red Hat/Fedora Core installation on this machine, do not. Choose Reinstall System.
- Choose a Custom system.
- Select Autopartition to automatically partition your drive for you.
- Choose Remove all partitions on this system unless you desire to
keep a current partition.
- You will now be in the Disk Druid utility. You should see a table with
partition information and mount points. Generally, you shouldn't need
to change anything here (assuming you chose to autopartition), but if
you wish you may do things such as change the size of the swap
partition, add partitions and so on. If you aren't sure what
you're doing, don't change anything.
- Choose OK to continue on.
- Choose OK to use the GRUB boot loader.
- Choose OK to use the default options passed to the kernel.
- Do not use a GRUB password and choose OK.
- Choose OK when asked about booting to other operating systems.
- Choose OK to install the boot loader in the master boot record (MBR).
- Uncheck the Configure using DHCP box.
- Keep the Activate on boot box checked.
- IP: Enter Your IP
- Netmask: 255.255.255.0
- Choose OK to continue on.
- Gateway: 129.89.61.1
- Primary nameserver: 129.89.7.2
- Secondary nameserver: 129.89.7.14
- Tertiary nameserver: 129.89.57.103
- Choose OK to continue on.
- Set the hostname manually. The host name should be something like: computername.phys.uwm.edu
- Choose OK to continue on.
- When prompted for firewall configuration, choose: No firewall.
- Choose OK to continue on.
- Choose Proceed to continue on.
- Set the Security Enhanced Linux to Disabled.
- Choose OK to continue on.
- Make sure the English USA language package is checked. Select any other
language packages you may find useful and choose OK to continue on.
- Check the System clock uses UTC box.
- Set the timezone to America/Chicago
- Choose OK to continue on.
- For the root password, ask Paul Armor which password scheme you should use for the machine. Enter the password correctly into both fields and choose OK to continue on.
- Deselect all package groups except GC Workstation and choose OK to continue on.
This completes the basic installation. The installer will reboot the
machine when everything is finished and you choose OK. When it is done
rebooting, a graphical screen titled "Welcome" will display. You will need to
finish setting up the machine here. Follow the instructions below to do so.
- Click Next at the "Welcome" screen.
- Set the time and date appropriately. Check the box Enable Network Time Protocol and use 129.89.7.2 as the server. Click Next to continue.
- Choose a display resolution. 1024×768 is a good screen
resolution for 15-inch monitors; larger screens can have up to
1280×1024. Choose the highest colour depth (16 or
24 bit) for your resolution. Click Next to continue.
- At the System User screen do not add a user and click Next to continue.
- Ignore the warning and click Continue to continue.
- If you have a soundcard, it may have been automatically detected. Test it
and enable it if it was detected. Click Next when done.
- Click Next on the "Additional CDs" screen.
- Click Next on the "Finish Setup" screen.
The graphical login screen will come up next. Log in as root. The rest of the
setup is done from the root account. Open a terminal (right-clicking on the
desktop and select "New Terminal"), and continue with the post-installation setup.
