GWDAW-8 Abstract: Inspiral waveform consistency tests

Inspiral searches using matched filtering have traditionally checked the self-consistency of a candidate event by dividing the template into several frequency bands and calculating a chi-squared from the contributions of the individual bands. This helps to eliminate many false events, but some obviously false events can pass this test, in particular those arising from non-stationary noise. We demonstrate a simple additional test, developed using LIGO data from the S1 science run, which is very successful at distinguishing these remaining false events from real inspiral signals.
