General Information
The Compact Binary Coalescence (CBC) group is a joint analysis working group of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and Virgo. The inspiral and merger of a compact binary system generates gravitational waves which sweep upward in frequency and amplitude through the sensitive band of the Earth-based detectors. The detection of gravitational waves from these astrophysical sources will provide a great deal of information about strong field gravity, dense matter, and the populations of neutron stars and black holes in the Universe. The CBC works to identify gravitational-wave signals from compact binary sources in the detector data, estimate the waveform parameters with confidence in the correctness and validity of the results, and use these results to explore the astronomy and astrophysics of these sources.
Organization
At present (June 2008), Steve Fairhurst, Frederique Marion, and Alan Weinstein serve as co-chairs of the CBC. Feel free to contact them with any inquiries about the group.
Mailing List
The working group has an electronic mailing list for announcements and discussion. This web page describes how to subscribe yourself and how to view the archive of messages. To send a message to the mailing list, address it to cbc at gravity.phys.uwm.edu . Any message sent by a person who is not currently a member of the mailing list will be held for review by the list moderators.
Web Pages
The CBC web pages help to coordinate the activities and collect the scientific results. The links to the left lead to electronic notebooks, documents, meeting minutes, etc. Access to information about analyses in progress is restricted to members of the LIGO and Virgo Scientific Collaborations. All web pages similar to this one, with the navigation links along the left edge, are kept in a CVS repository and may be edited by following the quick start instructions; more details about the LIGO/Virgo CVS are available in the CVS HOWTO.

Teleconferences
The regular weekly teleconference of the CBC takes place on Tuesdays at 08:00 Pacific time / 10:00 Central time / 11:00 Eastern time / 17:00 Central European time. These teleconferences are open to all LSC and Virgo members. Calling instructions are sent to the CBC mailing list, and may also be obtained by contacting one of the co-chairs.
