Getting to the Howard Johnson

Shuttle Information: Mitchell International Airport (MKE) to/from the Howard Johnson

To reach the hotel from Mitchell International Airport (MKE), use the Airport Connection shuttle service. Airport Connection operates a fleet of vans and shuttles serving locations throughout Milwaukee. Go to the Airport Connection desk near Baggage Claim Carousel #2 in Mitchell Airport. Shuttles leave approximately every 15 minutes. No advance reservation is required. The fare to the hotel is approximately $10 one-way. You can also call Airport Connection to be picked up from the hotel. Their Milwaukee numbers are 414-769-2444 and 800-236-5450. Call at least 3 hours in advance.

Coach Information: O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to/from the Howard Johnson

To reach the hotel from O'Hare International Airport (ORD), we recommend you use CoachUSA. CoachUSA runs buses between O'Hare and Milwaukee approximately every hour. Get off the bus at the Amtrak Station in downtown Milwaukee, and take a taxi to the hotel.

Driving to the Howard Johnson

Follow the driving directions to UWM to get into downtown Milwaukee, then do the following:

  1. Approaching downtown Milwaukee from the north on I-43: Merge to the left lane.
    Approaching downtown Milwaukee from the west on I-94: Merge to the center lanes.
    Approaching downtown Milwaukee from the south on I-94/I-43/Hwy-41: Merge to the right lane.
  2. Take the I-794 spur east toward Lake Michigan. Merge immediately to the right lane.
  3. Take exit 1D from the right lane. The exit ramp bifurcates; stay left and take Plankinton Avenue northbound.
  4. Take Plankinton Avenue north 2 blocks to Wisconsin Avenue. Turn left (west) onto Wisconsin Avenue.
  5. Take Wisconsin Avenue west 1/2 block to the Howard Johnson.

  6. Parking: Parking is available in a structure behind the hotel, with access on 2nd Street. There is indoor access between the hotel and parking structure. Obtain parking validation in the hotel lobby. With validation, parking costs $9 for 24-hours of unlimited access. Contact the front desk for additional information.

Getting to UWM from the Howard Johnson

Note: On-campus parking is often scarce when classes are in session.

Some curb parking in the neighborhood surrounding UWM is available, with restrictions. Therefore, guests of the Howard Johnson are encouraged to *****.

There are metered public parking lots at several locations on the UWM campus. Refer to the PDF map of the UWM campus for parking lot and building locations.

Driving Directions: From Howard Johnson to UWM

  1. Take 2nd Street north 1 block to Wells Street. Turn right (east) onto Wells Street.
    Note: Wells Street is one-way, eastbound.
  2. Take Wells Street east approximately 10 blocks to Prospect Avenue. Turn left (north) onto Prospect Avenue. Merge immediately to the right lane.
  3. Take Prospect Avenue 1 block north to the 3-way intersection at Kilbourn Avenue. Curve right (northeast) to stay on Prospect Avenue.
    Note: there is a construction site at the intersection of Prospect and Kilbourn. Please drive carefully. Howard Johnson to Prospect via Wells


  4. Take Prospect Avenue approximately 14 blocks northeast to North Avenue. Stay on Prospect Avenue. Merge to the left lane.
  5. Take Prospect Avenue 1 block northeast to Maryland Avenue. Turn left (north) onto Maryland Avenue.
    Landmark: Just past the intersection at North Avenue, Prospect Avenue bifurcates. Use the dedicated left-turn lanes onto Maryland.

  6. Take Maryland Avenue 9 blocks north to Kenwood Boulevard. You will see the UWM campus ahead.

  7. To reach the Physics Building, turn left (west) onto Kenwood Boulevard.
  8. Take Kenwood Boulevard west 1 block to the Physics Building.

Driving Directions: From UWM to Howard Johnson

From Kenwood & Maryland, on the UWM campus:

  1. Take Maryland Avenue 8 blocks south to Farwell Street. Turn right (southwest) onto Farwell Street.
    NOTE: Farwell Street is one-way, southwestbound.
    Take Maryland southbound

    Take Maryland to Farwell, and take Farwell southwestbound

  2. Take Farwell Street approximately 14 blocks southwest to the intersection of Ogden Avenue and Franklin Place. Turn gentle left (south) onto Franklin Place.
  3. Take Franklin Place one block south to Prospect Avenue. Turn gentle right (southwest) onto Prospect Avenue.
  4. Take Prospect Avenue approximately 3 blocks south to the 3-way intersection at Kilbourn Avenue. Turn gentle left (south) to stay on Prospect Avenue.
  5. Take Prospect Avenue 3 blocks south to Wisconsin Avenue. Curve right (west) onto Wisconsin Avenue.
    Landmark: Approaching Wisconsin Avenue, you will see the Milwaukee Art Museum to your left along the lakefront. Ahead, you will see a large steel sculpture, painted orange.
  6. Take Wisconsin Avenue west 8 1/2 blocks to the Howard Johnson.
