S4 Cosmic String Search Page
Summary of the searchThe goal of this search is to perform a matched filter search for bursts from cosmic string cusps in S4 data. If no bursts are found to set upper limits on the burst rate and translate these limits, via a model, into constraints on fundamental parameters of cosmic strings such as tension, reconnection probablity, etc.
Here's an example of the output of the search. The plot below shows the areas of exclusion (to the right of red), and areas of sensitivity (to the right of blue and black) of LIGO searches. The y-axis labels loop sizes and the x-axis is the string tension (10^-6 corresponds to GUT strings) a reconnection probability p=10^-3.

This technical report contains information about the code and extensive validations. The code references are a little out of date because they refer to a version of the code that is not being used. In particular: Sections I-IV of this file are good. Sections V-VII are out of date. See online documentation page Section IX contains extensive validations. It is a little out of date because the code used are from a while back but still relevant because the code has not changed that much.
