X-Pipeline S5 LIGO targeted GRB search report page

Report on the targeted search of S5 LIGO data for GRBs using X-Pipeline

On this page we will describe a targeted search of the first 18 months of S5 LIGO data for the GRBs which have been previously detected, and whose sky location found, through electromagnetic observations. Review readiness presentation .

The goal of this page is to provide the reviewers a beginning to end summary of the our analysis including data quality, vetoes, versions of codes used, results, follow up and conclusions. All relevant information should be either on this page or linked from this page.

X-Pipeline is a MatLab-based package for performing coherent bursts searches in interferometer data. The X-Pipeline code and documentation is available from here . A list of modifications, additions we wish to make to the code is maintained here .

Data quality and vetoes [ return to table of contents]

The analysis was done in stages, and at each stage the data quality flags and vetoes applied were updated. We therefore list the precise flags and vetoes used for each run in the appropriate results section, later.

We have used the List of GRBs Detected by Satellite Experiments During LIGO's S5 Run (validated) maintained by Isabel Leonor.

For the version 2 analysis of H1L1 and H2L1 data we have used: currentgrbs_html_offline_S5_080211_validated.txt (v1.1)

Results: Pre-MDC Runs [ return to table of contents]

This section provides details and results from the first analysis of the S5 pre-Virgo GRB set using X-Pipeline's built-in simulations engine. These results are superceded by those obtained later using MDCs (see following sections).

Results: Preliminary MDC Run [ return to table of contents]

This section provides details and results from the first preliminary analysis of the full S5-VSR1 GRB set using the ExtTrig MDCs. These results are superceded by those obtained later using updated versions of the X-Pipeline codes (see the following section).

The analysis of S5-VSR1 GRBs using Mock Data Challenge injections is described on this page in the burst twiki.

Results: MDC Rerun [ return to table of contents]

This section provides details and results from the rerun of the full S5-VSR1 GRB set using the ExtTrig MDCs. and updated versions of the X-Pipeline codes. The main code improvements were a fix to the normalization of the estimated power spectra, and a switch (bug fix) from using total energy to plus energy as the detection statistic for H1-H2 GRBs.

The rerun of S5-VSR1 GRBs using Mock Data Challenge injections is described on this page in the burst twiki.

Follow up studies [ return to table of contents]

In this section we will detail the follow up studies carried out for the GRBs which have less than 5% chance of being background. We will limit ourselves to performing follow up studies on approximately 5 GRBs. Our follow up will be based upon the Burst detection check list
