S4 LIGO-GEO Burst Review Committee Meeting Wednesday 26 March 2008 10:00 Eastern

Agenda and minutes of the weekly LIGO-GEO S4 Bursts Review telecon, held Wednesdays at 10:00 Eastern time.

Agenda and Contact Info

Agenda

  1. Status of the paper. [ Revision 1.22 / 1.28 CVS (Mar 12) ]
  2. Discussion of further checks/tests to be requested.
    Proposed tests:
    1. Analytic sensitivity estimates of the hrss50% points for the WB-CP and cWB pipelines.
    2. Look at injections for one of the loudest injection scales. Missed injections should be those with lowest antenna response factors.
    3. Check MDC coverage of coincidence observation time.
  3. A.O.B.

Walk-through of Agenda Items

  1. Status of the paper. [ Revision 1.22 / 1.28 CVS (Mar 12) ]
    • Heng: Shawhan has send comments by hardcopy. Not sure how to post/circulate. Sutton suggested Heng handle anything non-controversial, and let reviewers know if any of the suggestions look tricky. Perhaps the comments can be scanned and posted at a later date.
    • Heng: Katsavounidis has said he will pass on comments as well.
    • Klimenko: Creighton has again asked for more technical details on cWB to be added to the paper. Sutton, Riles would like a little more detail, but no strong feelings. Riles suggests paper will get through bursts review committee faster if Creighton's suggestions are incorporated now. Heng and Klimenko will add more details.
    • Sutton: When is next ExecComm meeting? Riles: April 3, but dedicated to APS talks. Next meeting probably in May. Sutton will check with Reitze.
  2. Discussion of further checks/tests to be requested.
    Proposed tests:
    1. Analytic sensitivity estimates of the hrss50% points for the WB-CP and cWB pipelines.
      • Sutton has made some progress on understanding the analytic sensitivity estimates for iWB (incoherent WaveBurst) on the LIGO-only S4 search. He studied the original estimate by Creighton (which assumes the signal occupies a single time-frequency pixel), and the corrections by Klimenko to account for clusters of more than one pixel. The measured ratio hrss50%/sqrt{S} ~ 25. Creighton's estimate was 8.5, while Klimenko's correction gives ~25. Sutton's calculation finds an error in Klimenko's correction, giving a ratio of ~15. If correct, this leaves a significant discrepancy between the theoretical estimates of the iWB sensitivity and the measured sensitivity.
      • Klimenko: Where does the error come in? Sutton: Roughly, the energy correction should be applied as a sqrt factor since we are computing an amplitude sensitivity. Will write up careful text and circulate with matlab script after the telecon.
      • Sutton: Systematic discrepancy could be due to use of "best" noise curves rather than run-averaged curves, though hard to imagine it is responsible for the full discrepancy. Can anyone suggest where to find run-averaged noise curves for S4? Riles: targeted pulsar searches may have this data. Check with Pitkin. Sutton: will also ask inspiral group.
      • Sutton: Antenna repsonse only included as all-sky average factor sqrt{5}. Should be fine for LIGO-only, but will have to Monte Carlo for LIGO-GEO pipelines.
    2. Look at injections for one of the loudest injection scales. Missed injections should be those with lowest antenna response factors.
      • Yakushin has run MDC post-processing scripts to generate tables of which injections have been found by iWB but not cWB, etc.: http://ldas-jobs.ligo.caltech.edu/~igor/test_031108/ There is a bug in the script - the files currently posted have junk values. Yakushin will find the bug and re-run, hopefully today.
    3. Check MDC coverage of coincidence observation time.
      • Yakushin will do this.
  3. A.O.B.
    To-dos:
    • Heng and Klimenko will try to circulate updated paper by Tuesday (which is also last day of 2-week comment period for the LSC).
    • Sutton will circulate document on analytic sensitivity estimates and try to figure out discrepancy.
    • Yakushin will send updated info on MDC studies.
