Agenda and Minutes, 12 September 2006
Agenda: Tues, 12 September 2006
1) News (Stuart steps down, some recent postings on ilog). 2) Decide what our role in the Grishchuk/LIGO debate over notation should be. 3) Begin review of radiometer technical document (i.e. Stefan's thesis).
Action Items from Sept 12 2006 meeting of review committee. Nelson's comments about radiometer paper: - Is strain the right unit to use in maps? - Would energy flux be better? - Use Whelan's new new Janske-like unit? Warren to send off email to Vuk, Peter and Stefan regarding units. Questions for Stefan: - recovery of stochastic hardware injections? Numbers? - full resolution maps for Harry? - why is error bar missing from the paper? - what is error bar? - what about the other pulsar injections?
Subject: Units on Radiometer Plots From: Warren G Anderson
To: Peter Fritschell , Vuk Mandic CC: Stuart Anderson , Warren Anderson , Nelson Christensen , Robert Schofield , Harry Ward , Stefan Ballmer Date: 2006-09-12 14:34 Hi, At the Stochastic Review Committee telecon meeting today, the question of the units used for the all sky maps was raised. I understand that there has been discussion within the Stochastic Group about the choice of units already, and we don't want to revisit old ground here. However, the point was raised that more physical units, like an energy flux, might be more easily interpreted by readers of the radiometer paper. Further, since this is the first paper on this kind of analysis, it is likely to define the standard for later papers, so we feel that this would be the time to put thought into things like notation and units. So, what I would like to know is whether it would be counterproductive to raise this issue again, or whether you think there is room for further discussion on it. Subject: Issues raised at todays Stochastic Review Telecon From:: Warren G Anderson
To: Stefan Ballmer CC: Stuart Anderson , Warren Anderson , Nelson Christensen , Robert Schofield , Harry Ward Date: 2006-09-12 14:50 Hi Stefan, We started looking at your thesis briefly today. We have a number of questions for you on the first few pages we looked at: 1) First, just a reminder - are you going to make the huge full resolution eps files of the sky maps available? 2) It is unclear to us from the text whether you tried to recover the all-sky injections using the radiometer version of the all-sky statistic. If so, could you please provide injected values, reconstructed values, and error bars. If not, why not? 3) Why is the error bar for H df that is quoted in table 3.4 of your thesis not in the paper? 4) What is the error bar for H dr in table 3.4 of your thesis? One sigma? 5) Why do only three pulsar hardware injections appear in the thesis? Were others analyzed? If so, what were the results? There is also the issue of units for the radiometer maps that I raised in a separate email. Finally, I expect we will be dealing with your thesis again at next weeks review telecon (Tuesdays at 13:00 Pacific). Will you be available to join? If so, we might be able to deal with some of these issues more quickly. Cheers, Warren -- +================[ WARREN G. ANDERSON ]====================+ | 15 Sierra Vista Terr.
